Last week, I talked about how SJM started and as I mentioned, it was really the product of same funny and thoughtful tweets, along with the encouragement of good friends and allies. However, the real work was in branching out from an idea and making it reality.

Once I decided to commit to the Campaign, I put my public relations and writing degrees to good use and planned out the next steps. I started by spreading the word and cementing our goals. In addition to deciding on our goals, I started to spread the word through Twitter and Tumblr. As the SJM started to spread, people began joining and I received a bunch of feedback, both positive and negative. I used everyone’s comments, questions, and criticisms to create the rest of the Campaign documents, such as “Why Support John Morrison?” and “Why This Campaign Is Different?”

With each article I wrote, the popularity of SJM grew. The word began to spread amongst the fans and we needed ways to keep in touch and work toward our goals. We had a Twittion which was focused on the core aim of the group. The Twitter account (@SaveJoMo) was originally set up and run by Joey of Starship Pained. After a time, I took it over and run it now. It’s linked to our Facebook page. Laura (@shoopdancer2504) created and maintained the Youtube page. She also used her video editing skills and created all our videos. I set up the Tumblr, which hosts many of our documents. It’s inactive but still available for viewing here. I also created the Facebook page which is still very active at 930 some likes and members and growing. We had also considered opening a blog, but it was near the end of the active campaign. However, I didn’t think we needed it.

Laura also created and organized the Twitter Rallies. The Rallies were a way to motivate others in SJM and spread the word. However, more importantly, they were a way to speak directly to the WWE. Also, we were able to take advantage of the sudden focus on Twitter and its function as a form of social media, but also as an online gathering place/meeting hall. One of the goals of the Rally was to create a trending topic (#SaveJohnMorrison,) which is harder than it appears. However, the most important things really was working to our goals and expressing ourselves.

I think we were successful there. The Rallies gave us the ability to flood @WWE, @WWEUniverse, and @WWERawGM’s (John Laurinaitis) Twitter mentions directly in attempt to have our voices heard. We raised our voices together as a collective, rather than as individuals. Our tweets featured similar things and used the same hashtag, making them identifiable as part of our efforts and to make them searchable. After each Rally, Laura would use them to create a video. They are still available on the Youtube page.

I liked the idea of others helping out and creating things for a campaign. I felt that as others did things, it truly made the group stronger. It wasn’t just one voice, my voice, speaking, but many, the group members. The “we” instead of the “I.” SJM couldn’t have been as successful and long lasting without everyone’s help and participation. To be honest, running the active Campaign was overwhelming at times. The Campaign sometimes seemed to have a life of its own at times. It was a lot of work, but became an inspiration to many. I was/am so grateful for everyone’s input and hard work.

While I don’t know if it was truly due to our efforts or some other booking decisions, Morrison was given an I-C title match at HIAC with Cody Rhodes, even though Cody was in a feud with former partner Ted DiBiase at the time. He wasn’t previously announced for the PPV. I’d like to think that our Rally efforts and complaints about him not being booked helped that happen.

Even with our efforts and successes, we were still fighting apathy from those who had given up too soon and the internet rumor about JoMo’s contact status. In spite of it, we grew and were successful. However the US title match was really the tipping point for both Morrison and the Campaign. Next week, I’ll finish the SJM retrospective by taking about the end of the campaign and what’s transpired since.
