Morrison and Mysterio wrestled for the Intercontinental Championship match on the September 4, 2009 Smackdown. While they have wrestled each other in a number of tag team matches, they have never been singles rivals. In fact, their I-C Title match is their first and only singles contest and it was considered one of the best SD main events of the year. Morrison has mentioned this as one of his favorite matches1 and many fans agree.

The two wrestlers have a tremendous amount of respect for each other. Rey has mentioned that Morrison is one of his favorite tag team partners.2 JoMo has mentioned Mysterio as one of his inspirations for getting into wrestling.3 With this mutual respect in mind, the two men shake hands.

Like the Royal Rumble 2009, this match starts off quickly. They lock up. Mysterio goes behind JoMo and rolls him up for a quick two count. They lock up again, but this time, Morrison rolls up Mysterio. JoMo and Rey lock up a third time. Instead of a test of quickness, like the first two lock ups, this one is a test of strength. JoMo wins the exchange. Normally, he is the smaller wrestler in the match, but against Mysterio, he isn’t. He has the power advantage.

Mysterio tries to break JoMo’s hold with some kicks, but Morrison flips him over and holds his shoulders down for a count. JoMo tries two more times to get a three, but is unsuccessful. Mysterio is able to kick out of the move. He jumps up onto Morrison’s shoulders and rolls him up for a two count. Mysterio bounces off the ropes and avoids a fist from JoMo, but he doesn’t avoid a kick and side headlock takedown.

We see Dolph Ziggler in the back watching the match, because that Sunday, at Breaking Point 2009, he would take on the winner. JoMo still has on a side headlock. Mysterio keeps his shoulders off the mat and rolls Morrison over. He gets on his knees and back to his feet. He strikes JoMo in the mid-section twice and then throws him off and to the ropes. Morrison hits a shoulder block. He comes off the ropes again, leaping over Mysterio and going under a leap frog. Rey goes to flip Morrison over, but JoMo avoids him by doing a parkour roll over his back.

JoMo covers Rey, who kicks out. In return, Mysterio trips Morrison and goes for a cover. Rey whips JoMo off the ropes and attempts a dropkick, but he hangs on to the opposite rope. He flips over a prone Mysterio and pins him. Both men get up. Mysterio catches Morrison with a drop toe hold and then goes for a la magistral pin attempt. They have a brief stare down and Smackdown goes to commercial.

We come back from commercial to see JoMo counter a side headlock and throw Mysterio chest first into the turnbuckles. JoMo turns Rey around, gives him a forearm shot, and whips him back first into the opposite corner. Morrison runs into the corner, but gets a knee to the face. He learns against the ropes and Rey runs off the opposite ones for momentum. He headscissors Morrison and they both end up outside the ring. Both men re-enter the ring to break the count at nine.

Mysterio catches JoMo with a series of kicks, which back him into the corner. Rey whips him out to the opposite corner. He runs at him, but JoMo moves and hits the corner post shoulder first. Morrison rolls him up, but only gets a two count. Morrison gets an armlock on and puts pressure on Rey’s injured shoulder. Mysterio tries to get up, but Morrison continues to hold onto the armlock. Mysterio breaks the hold with some fists, which JoMo answers with a knee to the stomach. JoMo whips Rey off the ropes and misses a clothesline. Mysterio then hits a beautiful float-over move, similar to the move JoMo used on Shelton Benjamin during the recent WWFX Title match. The move eventually becomes a headscissor takedown. Mysterio goes for a cover and only gets a two count.

Rey knees JoMo, forcing him back into the corner. He hits Morrison twice and then tries to whip him out of it, but JoMo counters it. Mysterio avoids the corner and jumps over Morrison, who follows him in. He turns and runs at JoMo, who’s now in the corner. He avoids Rey by escaping through the ropes. Mysterio tries to hit Morrison, but he avoids it by sliding in the ring through Rey’s legs. He pulls Mysterio’s hips, trying to pull him into a pin attempt. Rey reverses the move and he kicks Morrison hard in the side of the head.

Mysterio goes for a springboard moonsault and the pin. He gets a two. Mysterio comes off the ropes and hits Morrison with a running leg drop. He hits another and it leaves Morrison holding his jaw. The third leg drop has the same result. Mysterio goes for a pin and gets another two.

Mysterio goes for a side chinlock. Morrison fights up and the crowd starts chanting for him, even though he is taking on a very popular Mysterio. Rey releases the hold and kicks JoMo in the back. Rey takes his knee and drives it into Morrison’s back and pulls his arms back behind him, which are called handlebars. He fights up to his feet to put some space between himself and Rey, and hits a dropsault on Rey that catches him in the face. JoMo goes for a cover and gets two.

He whips Rey to the ropes and flapjacks him off the ropes. Morrison kips up. He measures Mysterio and hits a clothesline. He whips Rey again and this time connects a spinning heel kick. He poses a bit and hits the standing shooting star press. He gets a two count on the cover.

Mysterio gets up and stumbles to the ropes. JoMo follows. He goes for Mysterio’s injured arm again, but Rey reverses it. He runs to the ropes, looking for possibly another headscissors, but Morrison blocks it. He kicks JoMo, who returns it. JoMo slides Rey outside the ring under the bottom rope. He goes out after him and helps him back into the ring. He goes for a cover.

He kicks Rey before hitting the capoeira leg drop.  He goes for a cover and gets two. Morrison gets a side headlock, and pulls Mysterio’s arm over his neck. He uses this move in his match with Shelton Benjamin at Judgment Day 2009 match too and I still don’t have a name for it. Mysterio fights out of it. He punches Morrison a few times and hits a forearm. Rey comes off the ropes and avoids JoMo’s attack by going under his legs. He goes to kick Morrison, who grabs his leg. Mysterio turns and kicks with the other leg. Morrison catches that one too. Rey is able to roll JoMo up before he can counter him.

He hopes up onto JoMo’s shoulders again and rolls him up with a sunset flip for a two. We see Mysterio is getting frustrated. He forces Morrison into the corner and rushes in. JoMo back body drops him over the top, but Rey lands on the apron. JoMo goes to hit him, but Mysterio rams his shoulder into Morrison’s stomach. He hits a springboard headscissors which causes Morrison to land in perfect position for the 619, but JoMo catches him with a kick instead. He lifts Rey up, but he slips out of Morrison’s grasp. Rey runs to the ropes and avoids a clothesline. Both men go for a cross body and hit it. As we got to commercial, they are lying in the ring.

As we come back from commercial, Morrison is back suplexing Mysterio. He goes for a cover. Morrison puts on a chinlock with a bodyscissors. Mysterio fights out of the chinlock, but JoMo keeps a hold of Rey with the bodyscissors. Mysterio eventually breaks it, but Morrison is still in control. He whips Mysterio to the ropes. Morrison puts his head down too early and Rey kicks him in the chest. He tries to throw a stunned Morrison over the top rope and to floor, but JoMo lands on his feet.

Rey hits Morrison’s ankles with a baseball slide and knocks him off the apron. He hits his head on the edge of the ring on the way down. Mysterio delivers a headscissors after sliding through the second rope. Both men are outside. This time, Morrison’s helped back in by Rey.

Rey hits a springboard leg drop and gets a two count. He runs at the ropes and goes for a wheelbarrow, but Morrison catches him and plants him face first on the mat. JoMo goes for a cover. Mysterio’s in position for the running knee. Morrison hits it and gets another two. Now, he’s frustrated. He measures Mysterio and attempts to attack Rey in the corner, but misses. Mysterio hits the ropes and Morrison comes to the center of the ring. He tries to clothesline him. Rey ducks and comes off the ropes with a springboard cross body for a two count.

Both men get back on their feet. Rey comes to the ropes and Morrison stops him with a kick. JoMo goes to the ropes and tries a sunset flip. Mysterio rolls through and dropkicks him in the face. Rey gets a two. Mysterio is up first. He goes to the top, but JoMo catches him with a dropkick to the gut on the way down. This is the turning point of the match. Morrison covers him for a two.

Morrison covers him pulls Mysterio into position for Starship Pain. He misses when Mysterio rolls out of the way, but he lands on his feet. Mysterio goes to the apron and Morrison goes after him, but Rey hits him with another shoulder to the gut. Mysterio hits a springboard seated senton. He gets back up and hits the ropes for momentum. He hits a headscissors, which again put JoMo in position for the 619. This time, he hits it.

Both men recover. Rey goes for a springboard move off the ropes, but Morrison ducks it. He comes off the ropes and hits the Flying Chuck. He goes for a cover and gets a two. JoMo is frustrated again. The crowd is still into this match and it earns a “This is awesome!” chant. Morrison whips Rey into the turnbuckles chest first. JoMo runs in and gets an elbow. Mysterio comes out of the corner and Morrison hits a tilt-a-whirl backbreaker. It puts Rey in position for Starship Pain. The crowd is on their feet.

He goes for it, but Mysterio is up and hits him on the back, stopping his momentum. He hits Morrison in the back again. Mysterio goes for a super hurricanrana, but JoMo hangs on to the turnbuckle. Mysterio falls back into position for Starship Pain. Morrison tries it again and his time he hits it. He goes for a pin, and gets a three count to win his third Intercontinental Championship. Morrison celebrates a bit and then helps Rey up. They hug in another show of respect. As Mysterio leaves, Morrison’s hand is raised in victory again.
